Everyone that smokes cigarettes does so knowing fully well that it is injurious to their health. Knowing well that one's health is at risk, people still go ahead and smoke without giving it a thought. Since times immemorial, mankind has been smoking tobacco in various forms such as rolls, cigars and cigarettes etc. Many people believe that people had begun to smoke tobacco to generate heat in the body to be able to withstand the extreme cold temperature. There is a line of thought believed by historians that in some communities, tobacco was used as a part of the religious rituals and later on this became a social custom and part of daily life.
We can assume that the cigarettes saw the highest consumption rate in the world around Second World War. The demand from the soldiers was for cigarettes was so high during the world war that it was being provided along with the monthly ration by the army. After the Second World War, the scientific research field made rapid advances. Scientists found the relation between smoking and lung cancer and this was one of the major discoveries that had a deep impact on the public health. Once it was proved that cigarette smoking leads to lung cancer and other forms of oral cancers too, Governments began to take notice of the dangers of smoking. Thanks to the Government initiative and public sympathy, there came up several movements to increase the awareness of ills of smoking amongst people and to dissuade them from the habit. The efforts further culminated in legislations being passed by various countries making it mandatory for all cigarette manufacturing companies to issue health warning on each cigarette case.
Today we all know the ill effects of smoking. We also know that the nicotine present in the tobacco makes the body dependant upon it and thus the addiction to smoking is built. Though people get addicted to smoking after they have begun to smoke for a while, the reasons for them to start smoking are more psychological. Many children who begin to smoke right in their high school do so because of peer pressure or due to their being rebellious.
It is the will and mental control over the self that can help him quit smoking. It is difficult for chain smokers who have been smoking for a number of years to suddenly stop and quit smoking overnight. Any effort to quit smoking generates a back leash reaction in the body with withdrawal symptoms push the boundaries of self control of the individual and push him back to cigarettes to feel good. It requires supreme will power and determination to be able to transcend the boundary and beat the habit.
Don't we all know that our will and the mind power is superior to the physical strength and power?. Any one with a strong mind power and will can quit smoking. Most often people though aware of the harmful effects, still do not think that it will happen to them. But when they do come down with a disease caused due to smoking, the truth hits home and they automatically stop smoking.
Many more adults continue smoking through their bachelor days and quit when they get married and become proud parents. Many have quit smoking the minute they held their child in hand and realized that their bad habit can hurt their child.
